Medical Personal Subjected To The Violance In Emergency Department-Enquiry Study

Abstract

Introduction and objective: This study has been done to determine and evaluate status of the health personal in emergency department in case of exposure to the violence while working.
Matherial and method: In this study we made on enquiry study composed of 15 questions among the 150 health personals, working in emergency department of Cumhuriyet University Hospital, Numune Hospital, SSK Hospital and 112 Emergency Rescue in Sivas central area and 40 health personals in Ankara area between April-June of2002.
Findings: The number of health personal included in the study was 190. Among these 122 (64.2%) was male and 68 (35.8%) was female. According to their occupation 76 (40.0%) of them was doctor, 60 (31.6%) of them was assistant health personal and 54 (28.4%) of them was nurse. In the last 5 years 228 (61.1%) and persons were exposed to or witness of verbal violence, 58 (15.6%) persons were exposed to or witness of actional violence and 87 (23.3%) were threatened among these violence conditions 100 (36.0%) of them were happened in the cases of alcohol and substance abuse which study the fırst place and secondly the reason was waiting for the health service for a long time. The study showed that the people who applied the violence were generally male of 21 to 30 years old relative of the patient, having mid edu ca tion level. In most of the cases those people who applied the violence had been shouting with a high noise level and blaspheming to the health personaL. Due to these violence 54 (25.4%) of health personals suffened from pschological disturbances and 22 (11.6%) cases had been reflected legal departments.
Result: In the study, we realized that emergency department personals were exposed to heavy violence while working whatever the occupational status is and they were not satisfıed with security system. So it is absolutely necessary to make on educational study about this entity.
