Abstract

Ileus is a common condition encountered in emergency departments. Accurate diagnosis of the etiology is essential for therapeutic planning. Gallstone ileus which is one of these etiologies is a well known complication of recurrent cholecystitis however it is rare. In general population, it accounts for 1-2% of mechanical small bowel obstruction. Classical findings on abdominal plain radiography are present in only 30-35% of patients. In cases where the classical findings are not present diagnosis can not be achieved before operation or may be delayed. This is why computed tomography (CT) is commonly used in emergency cases for prompt diagnosis of ileus. It is important to be aware of the clinical and radiological findings of gallstone ileus. We report the clinical and radiological findings of a case in which gallstone ileus was diagnosed by CT.
