Abstract

Although there are 13 scorpion species in Turkey, the venom of only two produce severe systemic toxicity. Application of a symptomatic toxicological approach in the treatment of scorpion envenomation may be effective. The decision to utilize antivenin for patients presenting with scorpion envenomation should be based on evidence based algorithms, which incorporate clinical features including signs, findings and age of the patient. The use of antivenin should be weighed against potential toxicity resulting from administration of the antidote. An example of antivenin utilization is detailed in this case report.
